For a week in August, 13 artists ages nine to eighteen refurbished, redesigned or created using found objects. In the first project, the artists brought in a pair of canvas sneakers. Some were old and some were new. The challenge was to design a new look for the shoes. First, the shoes were gessoed and then painted with acrylic paints. Ink pens were used for detail. The sneakers were sprayed and protected so they could be worn in all kinds of weather.
For the second work, students brought in various types of strings, papers, flowers, plastic caps, shells, and other similar items. The concept was to create a clock. Each artist was given a flat canvas board, which had a hole drilled in it to accept the clock movement. A template was used for the correct placement of the numbers. Each clock designed had a different personality!
